Hackathon introduces young analysts to real-world problems

Katherine Anne Giles, a recent MBA grad from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, and Iman Dayarian, a postdoctoral fellow from the University of Toronto, teamed up to win the AIMMS Hackathon. The event, held in conjunction with the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, is designed to help students and young O.R. specialists develop modeling and optimization skills while gaining experience in using AIMMS software to solve complex real-world problems. Hackathon contestants also gained exposure to consulting and the airline industry thanks to the participation of Booz Allen Hamilton and Southwest Airlines. Read more

The Analytics Section of INFORMS continued to progress in 2015, both increasing its membership base and expanding its scope of activities, all of which were reviewed at a lively reception and business meeting at the 2015 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. As of this writing, the Section has 1,171 registered members and 1,724 engaged with its LinkedIn community. Read more

The IAA Award recognizes creative and unique developments, applications or combinations of analytical techniques used in practice. The 2015 winner, Mayo Clinic, gave a reprise of their winning presentation entitled “Intelligent Surgery Scheduling” at the INFORMS Annual Meeting. INFORMS will once again offer the Student Analytical Scholar Competition, a scholarship program that will send the winning recipient to the 2016 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research. Supported by SAS and sponsored by the Analytics Section of INFORMS, the competitive program will recognize one outstanding student who would like to learn more about the practice of analytics at the conference in Orlando, Fla., April 10-12, 2016. The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences annually presents the INFORMS Prize for effective integration of OR/MS and advanced analytics into organizational decision-making. The award is given to an organization that has repeatedly applied the principles of OR/MS and advanced analytics in pioneering, varied, novel and lasting ways. A group of subject matter experts recently met at the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina to begin development of the Guide to the Analytics Body of Knowledge to complement the INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional (CAP®) program. The two-day event was led by RTI personnel who are skilled in the development of bodies of knowledge for various disciplines.
